For every home we sell this year, we’ll donate $500 to Together We Rise.
My name is Rae Dolan. I spent my teenage years in the foster care system. And while I was able to beat the odds and thrive as an adult, many graduates of the foster care system aren’t as lucky.
- Every day, 1,200 youth enter the foster care system
- 1 in 5 foster youth who age out of the system will become homeless after age 18
- Only half of them will be employed by age 24
- Less than 3% of them will go on to earn a college degree
- 71% of female foster youth will become pregnant by age 21
- 1 in 4 foster youth will experience PTSD
- Foster youth are twice as likely to suffer PTSD than U.S. war veterans
As a former foster youth in the position to pay it forward, I feel a duty to do so.
Together We Rise is a national organization dedicated to improving the lives of – and outcomes for – foster children. While the organization is national, they localize donations when possible to help children in the area where the donations originated.
Our donations are split equally between two of their core programs:
Sweet Cases for Kids (localized): Most foster youth are given trash bags to hold their belongings when they enter the system and move between placements. That sends a horrible and unacceptable subliminal message to foster youth. The Together We Rise Sweet Cases for Kids program provides foster youth with duffel bags filled with essentials like a teddy bear, blanket, hygiene kit, and much more. They also provide duffel bags for teenagers and items more appropriate for their age group.
Family Fellowship Fund (national): Together We Rise chooses up to 15 foster youth per year to send to college. They give five years of financial support to help with tuition, books, and tutors, a monthly housing allowance as well as housing for summer and winter breaks, mentors carefully selected for each fellow and emotional support services to all fellows year round.
